AFTERMATH – The Second Flood
(AFTERMAth – Die Zweite Flut)

A feature documentary by Raphael Barth
Austria, Germany, Ireland 2009-2014, 92/52 min.

A co-production with Filmtank Hamburg (DE), Twopair Films (IRL), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (IN), Austrian Broadcasting Corporation Film (ORF)

With the support of Filmfonds Wien (FFW), Irish Film Board (IFB), Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein (FFHSH), Fernsehfonds Austria (RTR),

Over a period of seven years Raphael Barth has followed the fate of the Nicobarese in the wake of aid and development after the Tsunami 2004.

AFTERMATH is the story of young people from an ancient tribe on remote islands who are suddenly driven into a new world by the Tsunami. Overwhelmed by history ́s biggest wave of aid and development soon after, they are searching with humour and pride for their own, self- determined life in a globalized world. Instead of surrendering, the Nicobarese face the challenges. They travel to the unknown world to meet with researchers and allies.

The film offers unique insights into the lost culture of the Nicobar Islands. In never before seen images, scientist Simron Jit Singh takes us onto an emotional journey with his early film recordings of this mysterious ancient culture, dating from long before the Tsunami.

Together with his friends, Nicobari Prince Rasheed Yusuf and journalist Denis Giles, he is soon confronted with the suffocating pressure of aid and development. They decide to help in a different way: They raise their own money, they start their own NGO and they train their own activists from within the Nicobar Islands. On their way, the three friends risk all they have. But they find new concepts, how sustainable humanitarian aid and development could look like in the future.

It is only the second time that Indonesians can vote for their own president. Two charismatic women, however, are not satisfied with mere elections. Grandma Dela, who lives in a slum of the tropical megacity, and the intellectual Wardah Hafidz are setting out to collect 1.5 million signatures of the poorest, who are constantly threatened by the local arbitrary justice and the desires of the global capital. Can the power of a small elite really be overthrown by the power of many, or is “real democracy“ just an ideal?

Venice: Appearance at any cost. While the masses flock to the city of lagoons, the remaining natives lack infrastructure, affordable housing and the “typically Italian” social life. While the stereotypes are upheld in order to lure visitors from all over the world, it is the “original” Venice that ceases to exist precisely because of this mass influx. Andreas Pichler casts light on this paradoxical predicament and intones an intricate cinematic requiem.

World Sales: First Hand Films Zurich

A co-production with arte France and with the support of Filmfonds Wien (FFW), Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture – Innovative Film Austria (BMUKK)

A family’s story, typically crazy and exceptional at the same time. A film about home and exile, parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters and all the other relatives, close and distant, in an extended Persian family. Some of them emigrated to Europe or America, though the majority has stayed in Iran. Regardless of all the danger involved, they secretly meet after 20 years at a place which won’t raise suspicion among the Iranian authorities: Mecca. They come from America, Sweden, Austria and Iran to laugh, argue, cook and celebrate. This is accompanied by an excessive amount of hugging and kissing, and also a clash between Muslim and Western cultures.

Beyond the forest
(EINST SÜSSE HEIMAT)

A feature documentary by Gerald Igor Hauzenberger
Austria 2007, 78 min.

With the support of Filmfonds Wien (FFW), Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture – Innovative Film Austria (BMUKK)

A documentary about two of the last Saxons and Landlers. In his garden an old man has spread out an old patched sheet. He wants to die there and be eaten by the animals. Close-by a woman sits at her gravestone; she has already lived eight years past the date of death that is engraved on her stone. With the fall of Hitler, he has also fallen and she had to go into a work camp.
The film shows two very humorous, but broken people, who witnessed the disappearance of their own culture. Now both of them are old, alone, and they want to die. The best thing would be to simply ‚disappear’ from the world.

Romania last summer before the turn of the millennium. In the small villages near the Carpathians there idyll. Appearances are deceptive, because almost ten years after the overthrow of Ceausescu neither wealth was generated, nor was the new political leadership capable of allowing people to a secure existence. While in Europe, the eclipse is the major event of the summer and the medial hole stuffed, life in Transylvania is at the same time its usual course. Day by day people are working to ensure their survival. Make between hay, bake bread, milk the cows on the occasion of the solar eclipse occur not only fear, but also hopes and dreams to the surface, which revolve around a better life.

THIS HUMAN WORLD

A documentary by The Riahi Brothers
Austria 2012, 2.44 min.

The short film ‘This Human World’ was created in the course of the shooting of The Riahi Brothers’ cross-media project ‘Everyday Rebellion’.

Shot in a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, the film takes an ironic approach to images of children, who on the one hand are fascinated by the camera, but at the same time already take advantage of it for their own purposes.
A film about patience, hope and the ambivalence of human nature.

“The Folds of the King” is a documentary about simultaneous interpreters. Two interpreters sit in a booth. Using headsets, they listen to prerecorded English interview passages (these “originals” are inaudible to the viewer), which they simultaneously translate into German. The source interviews are conversations with translators, translation scholars, interpreters, politicians, philosophers of language, neurolinguists, and others. Approaching the process of translation from a great variety of perspectives, the film also allows the viewer to become part of that process.
